Member Guidelines

Surfing Information.

  • Surfers can paddle out 5 minutes before their heat starts but must not move into the take-off area until the previous heat has ended.

  • The start of the heat will be identified with a hooter and the signpost turned to green.

  • 5 minutes before the end of a heat, there will be an orange flashing light and\or orange flag displayed.

  • The end of the heat will be identified with a hooter and the signpost turned to red.

  • When the heat is finished surfers should return immediately to the shore lying down on the board.

  • Competitors who stand on their boards when returning to shore can be disqualified.

  • Please proceed immediately to the judging tent to return your comp rash vest

  • A shark warning is identified with 3 blasts of the horn. Surfers should return to shore immediately lying on their boards.

  • Competitors are to surf within the designated area defined by the beach flags.

  • No free surfing or swimming within the designated surf area please.

Other Information.

  • Please stay clear of the judging tent and the immediate vicinity – judges are concentrating!

  •  Please take a turn at judging. No experience is necessary and full training and support will be provided – you might even enjoy it!

  • No dogs on comp days please. Many beaches prohibit dogs, but more importantly it’s a family day with many young children who don’t all love your furry friends as you do.

Scoring

The leaderboard.

  • Dalmeny Boardriders uses the WSL standard of point scoring for our competitions and leaderboard.

  • Waves are judged out of 10 with the 2 highest scoring waves in the heat used to determine the final heat score. A minimum of 50% of the heat will progress to the next round ie 2 surfers will progress in a heat of 4, with 3 surfers progressing in a heat of 5.

  • Competition points are allocated using the WSL structure as shown below.

  • Points are awarded for every place and are based on the Surfing Australia guidelines.

  • Surfers who are competing in an external competition or training camp where they are representing the Dalmeny Boardriders Club (eg Performance Camp, State Titles etc) on a DBR Comp Day will receive 860 points – equivalent to 2nd place.

  • As per Surfing Australia Guidelines, the EOY division winners will be those with the highest point score in a select number of pointscores only. Where 7 or more comps are run in a year, 2 pointscores will be excluded ie best 6 of 8 comps. If only 6 or less comps are run in the year only 1 pointscore will be excluded ie best 5 of 6 comps. This allows for competitors to miss a couple of events (holiday, illness, injury, slept-in!) or drop their lowest point scores.

Scoring rules.

  • Our boardrider comps are typically judged with 3 judges and a head judge using an electronic program called Liveheats. This is the same program that is used for season registration, competition registration, heat draws and the leaderboard.

  • All members over 13 are encouraged to judge a couple of heats. Training and support are provided and a head judge is in attendance to guide the newer judges.

  • Judging criteria guides are available in the judging tent for both shortboard and longboard events.

  •  If a surfer ‘drops in’ on another surfer, they will receive no points for the ‘drop in’ wave, and the points for their highest scoring wave in the heat will be halved.

  • Points can only be scored for 10 waves in a heat

  • The final heat score for a competitor is the sum of the highest two scoring waves in the heat

  •  A minimum of half the competitors in a heat will proceed to the next round, ie 4 person heat – 2 will proceed, 5 person heat – 3 will proceed
